MetroAir Hub
Washington Dulles International was designated MetroAir's new primary hub for east coast operations on December 9th 2007. The upgrading of Dulles to hub status coincided with the downgrading of MetroAir's first hub and base of operations at Detroit Metropolitan International (KDTW).
"It's a bittersweet moment at MetroAir. When we chose to pull out of Detroit a few months back, we wanted to phase the withdrawal so it would not create so much shock and upheaval across airline." said COO Matt Calsada.
CEO Tom Collins continued "While our headquarters will remain in Romulus, MI, our aircraft won't. It will continue to serve as a destination and as a focus city for point-to-point flights, it will not resume activity as a major hub for the airline."
It was clear to the Executive Management that KIAD was the perfect area to continue the growth of the airline. In the short time KIAD had been on the schedule, management had watched it excel both in passenger numbers and in turnover. These factors, along with Detroit's continuing economic struggles only helped in making the decision to announce KIAD as MetroAir's new hub.
KIAD will be served by a fleet consisting of Dash 8 Q200 & Q400 aircraft, Saab 2000's and MetroAir's new Airbus A319's. Dulles will also serve as the airline's base for all trans-atlantic flights to the United Kingdom which are flown by the airline's Boeing 767-200ER's and new Airbus A330's when they enter service.
General
Washington Dulles International is named after John Foster Dulles, United States Secretary of State under Dwight D. Eisenhower. It is a major hub for United Airlines and a focus city for JetBlue Airways.
On a typical day, 1,800 to 2,000 flights are now handled at Dulles, up from 1000 to 1200 in 2003. It remains the second busiest trans-Atlantic gateway on the Eastern Seaboard.
The inception of low-cost carrier Independence Air in 2004 propelled IAD from being the 24th busiest airport in the United States to 5th, and one of the top 10 busiest in the world. At its peak of 600 flights daily, Independence, combined with service from JetBlue and AirTran, briefly made Dulles the largest low-cost hub in the United States.
The airport occupies approximately 11,000 acres of land 26 miles west of downtown Washington, straddling the border of Fairfax County and Loudoun County, Virginia. It is located within two unincorporated communities, including partly in Chantilly and partly in Dulles. The airport is west of Herndon and southwest of Sterling. In 1958, the former unincorporated community of Willard was torn down to make room for Dulles, and countless roads, homes, stores, and schools were demolished to make room for runways, concourses and other features.
A nearly $4 billion dollar construction program began in 2000 to meet future passenger demand. Major projects include two new parking garages, a fourth runway, a new concourse, a new Air Traffic Control tower, pedestrian walkways and an airport train system. This project is called the Dulles Development program, or D2.
The main terminal was recognized by the American Institute of Architects in 1966 for its design concept; its roof is a suspended catenary providing a wide enclosed area unimpeded by any columns. It It houses ticketing, baggage claim, and information facilities, as well as the International Arrivals Building for passenger processing.
Although the original design is still intact, the increase in low-cost carriers and increased security requirements have caused functional problems, with long lines at security checkpoints and crowded conditions in the once-more than adequate ticketing area occurring during peak periods.
