General
Charlotte-Douglas International ranks as the nation's 16th busiest airport in operations, 19th in passengers and 35th in cargo. It serves 1.5 million people in an area that includes all or part of 18 counties in North and South Carolina.
The airport that preceded today's facility was privately owned and used only on weekends for air shows and war pilot training. In 1935, thanks to the leadership and foresight of Mayor Ben Elbert Douglas Sr. (for whom Charlotte Douglas International Airport is named), Charlotte voters approved a bond issue that brought the airport under municipal administration and set the stage for the expansion that was to come.
Charlotte is two hours or less by air to more than half of the country's population, making the airport an excellent location for cargo operators. Cargo carriers serving Charlotte carried 184,282 tons of domestic and international cargo in 2004. The Charlotte Air Cargo Center is served by 18 cargo companies and more than 70 freight forwarders.
Charlotte's passenger terminal now encompasses 1.7 million square feet, with 100,000 square feet under currently under construction. A 325,000-square-foot terminal, the basis for today's terminal, was opened in 1982 and expanded by 194,000-square-feet with a food court and shopping atrium in 1994. Significant airfield improvements completed in 1996 have helped make the airport more efficient for its tenant airlines. These improvements included a new reliever taxiway that was recommended for enhancing capacity. The taxiway required expansion of nearby ramp areas; this, in turn, began the process for a future 11-gate expansion of Concourse B.
Air transportation is an important job for the airport, but it is not the only one. Charlotte Douglas International Airport also contributes nearly $10 billion in annual total economic impact to the Charlotte region. In addition, over 100,000 jobs in the region are directly or indirectly related to the airport and its services. Workers in those jobs earn $5 billion in wages and salaries.
